Guess what. It’s Tuesday! Guess what that means. Another #TwentyTuesday post!
Today’s post is coming from yours truly. (That’s me.)
I love music. Music speaks to me on a soul level. Ya know? Music puts words to feelings and gives voice to emotions. I love it when you’re just not quite sure how to feel about something, and a song will come on and suddenly it all makes sense. Music is powerful. Words are powerful.
Lately I’ve been on a kick with live-your-life kind of songs. Songs about being adventurous, spontaneous, living each moment fully. There are songs that pump you up and motivate you to get out there and start living! Then there’s songs that understand the struggle is real and you can’t get out there because you’re poor.
These songs have been resonating with me lately as a 24 year old single gal. I’m young, I’m free, I’m capable of whatever, I seek adventure, I seek meaning; I’m living this life with nothing but strong coffee and God at my side and it’s intoxicating. Maybe the 30’s will be the best years of my life, or maybe the 40’s or 60’s (not 50’s, everyone seems to hate their 50’s), but this stage is all I know right now and I don’t want to let it pass me by without soaking in every possible joy, experience, delight and beautiful moment I possibly can.
You feel this way, too? Awesome. Allow me to introduce you to the new soundtrack of your life. These are just a few of my favorite songs for those in their 20’s.
1. “Twenty-somethings” by Judah & the Lion
Boom. What song screams 20-something better than one that directly says it in the title? This song is my anthem right now. It’s perfect. “We don’t know where we’re going but we’re on the run. We don’t know where the road ends, but we’re having fun. Running scared, Running free, Full of light, Got no money, Yeah, that’s us. Twenty-somethings.”
2. “28 Thousand Days” by Alicia Keys
This song is about not taking any second for granted. And if you’re wondering (like I was) 28,000 days is 76 years. A rough estimate of how many days you have, but nonetheless, the truth rings true. Live your life to the fullest while you have the time! “If you had 28 thousand days, Who would you love? Where would you go? What would you celebrate? I’m telling you that life’s too short to just throw it away. So have the time of your life.”
3. “22” by Taylor Swift
I couldn’t not do this song, guys. When I turned 22, this was literally all I listened to the whole day, because obviously. And my favorite line of the song still gets stuck in my head from time to time. “We’re happy, free, confused, and lonely at the same time. It’s miserable and magical.” (I feel ya, TSwift).
4. “I’m Turnt” by Lecrae
For those times when you wanna turn up but too old to be out all night. And also don’t wanna do the drugs. “Prolly think I’m rolling, I’m just high on the spirit bro!”
5. “Live While We’re Young” by Johnnyswim
This song is so chill. It reminds me of times when you’re at a friends house playing card games, or sitting around a bon fire, or going on a joy ride through town. In those moments you think to yourself, man…life is good. You’ve got your friends by your side and your doing this thing called life. “Make no mistake, We’ll live while we’re young, We’ll chase down the sun.”
6. “Saturday Night” by Sam Hunt
First of all, I love Sam Hunt with everything in me. He’s gorgeous and his music is insanely good. He has single-handily made me a believer in country music. Second of all, I love playing this song when the weekend hits. When I’m tempted to stay in and watching Hallmark Christmas movies (which are awesome), I hear Sam’s ever-soothing voice prompting me to go out, because “We’re way too young to be sitting at home on Saturday night”.
7. “Crazy” by Ben Rector
While I’m always up for a night out, the every day mundane makes life awesome, too. I love that Ben (we’re on a first name basis) wrote a song about the crazy “normal” life of Netflix, pasta and going to bed at 10. “We got off work and met at Bed, Bath and Beyond. You looked at curtains, I bought a birthday card for mom. We wanted tacos, but the taco truck was gone. Last night was crazy.”
8. “Bad Blood” by Taylor Swift
I’m not saying you should harvest your anger and sing about it, but let’s be honest, sometimes we get into fights with our friends, or angry at our roommates, or frustrated by our significant others, or even pissed off at our cats (guilty). And sometimes we just need to get in our car, turn the volume WAY up, and belt it out because TSWIFT UNDERSTANDS. “Did you think we’d be fine? Still got scars on my back from your knife.” Ouch.
9. “Alive” by Sia
This song is gold. It makes me feel like I can handle anything. Life throws some crazy stuff at us (bills, responsibilities, work issues, detoured dreams, health complications) but we always make it through and we always make it out stronger. This song is an anthem for that. Get it, Sia! “I’m still breathing. I’m alive!”
10. “Run Wild.” by For King and Country (feat. Andy Mineo)
In case you get caught up in the mess of life and need this reminder. “You’re a lion full of power who forgot how to roar. You’re an eagle full of beauty but you can’t seem to soar. Will you return to the garden where we were first made whole. Will you turn to the one who can liberate your soul.” You’ve got this.
